Ergonomic Quick Tip:
Eye Movement Clues to Prevent Workplace Injuries

Source: Kristen Cederlind

Did you know that how someone moves their eyes offers clues to movements that can cause injuries?

When experienced physical therapists (PTs) work with employees at the job site, they watch where eyes are focused or how their eyes are moving. Here is what movements can indicate:

  • Are the eyes wide open and focused upward? Chances are the neck will also be or become extended (even if it starts in a neutral position).
  • Are the eyes focused or moving downward? Chances are the neck will also be flexed or begin moving toward flexion.

It has been said that your eyes are the feet of your posture – where your eyes look, your posture will follow.  These visual cues (pun intended) help identify issues that prevent injuries.

Here’s another tip –your eyes work hard and need mini-breaks throughout your work day.  Check out these helpful prevention tips from the American Optometric Association.

WorkWell PTs have worked with hundreds of employees at the job site to assess risks like these and provided solutions.  If you’re looking for prevention ideas, contact WorkWell today.
